Carnivorous City extravaganza from Hawksmoor veterans
Location: City of London
Cuisine: Meat, meat and more meat
Budget: £
For those carnivores among us, you have to try Blacklock – a restaurant dedicated to providing high quality, tasty meat. I had had Blacklock on my list of places to try for a while and with the recently opened second branch next to the Walkie Talkie, only moments from my work, I had absolutely no excuse not to tick it off!
I would urge first time visitors to go for the All In option offering some nibbles to begin with, a selection of all the mini chops and a side each all for only £20 per person – a total bargain! As much as that might not sound like a lot of food 4 mini chops each ends up creating a rather large mound of meat. We had a mixture of lamb cutlets, lamb rump, pork belly, pork ribs, pork loin and beef sirloin creating our meat feast, all of which were full of flavour and delicious.
For your choice of side always always go for the 10 hour ash roasted sweet potato. The sweet potato is perfectly seasoned and melts in your mouth. To go with my chops I chose the garlic marrow spread, also insanely tasty and a divine accompaniment to the sweet potato (maybe not one for a first date though as the garlic is rather strong!)
The big chops are recommended for two or more people to share. They are charged by the 100g and you can see the day’s options on a big blackboard – as the evening goes on you will see them being crossed out as diners enjoy
Located in an old substation the décor is urban with meat related slogans painted across mirrors and blackboards creating a completely unpretentious atmosphere, a welcome change in the City.
Never an issue I normally face but at Blacklock I struggled to finish my meal! Thankfully I got a doggy bag so could relive my yummy experience another night from the comfort of my sofa (and stretchy trousers!)
With exceptional service and perfectly cooked and seasoned meat I cannot wait to return. I will be back to indulge on further chops on a Butcher’s Monday soon!
