The nearest airport to Niagara Falls in Buffalo Niagara Airport in the US, however this is only served by domestic flights; those coming from further afield are best opting to fly into Toronto International airport and transfer from there. From Toronto , the easiest way to get to Niagara Falls is by greyhound bus. With journey times of only 90 minutes, decent value tickets and seat reservations it’s best to catch the bus as the train service runs a lot less frequently and costs around double the price! Niagara is around a 6 hour drive from New York for those wanting to drive into the area, although you won’t really need a car once you arrive in this compact city.
Not usually one to stay in a large chain hotel, Niagara is a place I would recommend doing so. The Sheraton at the Falls, Hilton Fallsview and Marriott on the Falls all offer spectacular views of Niagara Falls (as their names might suggest), along with all the usual amenities you would expect. For those exploring the wine region, stay at Riverbend Inn & Vineyard at Niagara-on-the-Lake to be right in the centre of the wineries.
Being such a popular tourist destination there are many restaurants to choose from providing standard tourist-type meals, however you can find a few hidden gems if you look hard enough! Hidden amongst the attractions of Clifton Hill sits AG Cuisine offering delicious local ingredients prepared using classic French techniques. Wine lovers should head to Weinkeller to enjoy craft wines paired with a seasonal menu, or explore one of the several restaurants attached to a winery.
For a drink with a view head to the Marriott’s Milestones on the Falls bar and restaurant overlooking the postcard-perfect view of the Horseshoe falls. Aside from the views there are some great places to grab a pint including The Grifton Gastropub with over 50 beers on tap! Wine lovers are spoilt for choice with the many wineries in the region, however near to Niagara Falls Wine on Third is the wine bar of choice.
Being home to Niagara Falls, one of the world’s most famous waterfalls, there are many activities based around this natural wonder including the must-do boat ride to the base of the falls to feel the spray on your face! Away from the waterfalls there are amazing landscapes to explore and plenty of activities in Clifton Hill for a rainy day. Further afield the wine region, in particular at Niagara-on-the-Lake, is well worth a visit to taste some new and exciting wines.
