The most famous National Park on the Indonesian side of Borneo is Tanjung Puting. To get here the easiest way is to fly into Pangkalan Bun – there are a few direct flights each day from Jakarta and other regional airports. Be aware that these flights tend to be operated by small airlines without a website, I recommend using Nusa Trip in order to ensure you get the best flights for your schedule. If travelling to Borneo to undertake a tour they may be able to assist in booking your flights. In peak season these flights get booked up quickly so make sure you are ahead of the game!
Although there are a few home stays and one eco lodge within Tanjung Puting national park, the best way to see Borneo is to stay on a traditional Kelotok. These wooden boats will rapidly become your home as you eat, sleep and watch the jungle go by from the main deck. Opt for a boat with a fresh water shower and a large seating area at the front of the boat for the best experience.
Whilst staying on the Kelotok all your meals are included, along with a range of snacks to make sure you are never hungry! The tastiest dishes we tried included sweet and sour prawns, baked river fish and tempeh (a type of fermented soy bean similar to tofu). Although the kitchen facilities are limited, all the meals served on board are plentiful and rather tasty.
Due to government regulations it is rare to find alcohol on sale either within the national park or Kumai. If you wish to enjoy a cold beer during your travels you may be able to arrange this with your tour company in advance, or you could bring your own alcohol aboard. All tours will include unlimited cold bottled water to ensure you stay hydrated in the humid rainforest.
The main attraction of Borneo and the reason 99% of travellers visit is to see orangutans in the wild. Along the river are several feeding stations where you can witness these amazing creatures stuffing their faces with bananas and sugar cane. Apart from the orangutans you can catch a glimpse of rare proboscis monkeys and some interesting creepy crawlies during a night trek.
