There are three airports near to Kruger (Phalaborwa airport, Hoedspruit Eastgate airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International airport), all of which are around an hours flight direct from Johannesburg airport on a light aircraft (there are luggage restrictions!). Alternatively you can hire a car/arrange a private transfer from Johannesburg, the drive takes between 4 and 6 hours dependent on which side of Kruger National Park you are headed to. If you’ve time to spare you can make the drive into a mini-road trip along the Panorama Route, where you can explore Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window.
For a touch of luxury you can indulge in stunning safari lodges located near to Kruger National Park. Set within private game reserves, you can stay in accommodation ranging from Robinson Crusoe style treehouses to lavish safari tents complete with infinity pools looking over the Savannah. Within Kruger National Park itself there are 12 rest camps dotted around the park offering more budget friendly options from self catering cottages to campsites where you can pitch your own tent!
The majority of Kruger’s safari lodges are full board meaning you’ll never be at a loss for a delicious meal. However, for an evening you will never forget arrange a Braai (BBQ) in the bush. As your food sizzles on the open fire you can enjoy wildlife viewing as the nocturnal animals come to life.
Watch the sun go down and the plains come alive as you relax back at your safari lodge with a refreshing glass of Savanna (South Africa’s local cider), alcohol is not allowed to be consumed within public areas of Kruger National Park. I also highly recommend trying another of South Africa’s homegrown drinks, Amarula, made from the fruit of the ‘Elephant tree’, this makes the perfect after dinner tipple.
Kruger National Park offers some of the best game viewing in the World (and this is likely why most people are in the area!). Enjoy game drives throughout the day and after dark spotting differing wildlife dependent on the time of your visit, keep your eyes peeled for The Big Five. There is also a golf course set within Kruger but you’ll have to watch out for antelope wandering across the green!
