Whilst the Mozambican coastline’s relative remoteness, makes it frustrating to get to, it certainly stems the hoards of tourists you’ll find in other Indian Ocean destinations. The easiest route is via Johannesburg, from which SA Airlink offer a daily route to Vilanculos. Alternatively there are also flights during the week from Maputo or Nelspruit (useful if aiming for a combined safari and beach adventure!). Similarly to the food, drinks will also likely be included in the cost of your resort. The country’s famous local beers of 2M (pronounced “Doish-Em”) and Manica can be found in all the hotels. Equally, expect to come across a few imported South African wines; if you stay at Azura you can even sample wines from the owner’s Loire vineyard!

Your hotel will undoubtedly offer a wide range of activities during your stay to explore the beautiful Bazaruto archipelago above and below water. Climb the stunning dune of Ponta Dundo at the southern tip of Bazaruto with views across the islands and back to the mainland. Alternatively hit the water to explore the magnificent two mile reef by snorkel or scuba to marvel at the area’s array of underwater life.
