Many low cost and national carriers fly directly to Porto from multiple European destinations. From London, Ryanair, TAP and British Airways all run daily routes. High speed trains also run regularly from other major Portuguese and Spanish cities, with the Alfa Pendular route from Lisbon taking around 3 hours.
Similar to Lisbon, there are many cute guesthouses dotted throughout the old town. For an ultimate splurge, head for The Yeatman, boasting an unrivalled position on the south of the Douro amongst the port cellars and overlooking the old city. Alternatively, 6only guesthouse offers a slightly more toned down stay, with a refined minimalist decor throughout the beautiful old house and only 6 suites starting from around £75 a night.
Porto is full of great restaurants, from small local places to high end gastronomic adventures. O Paparico falls at the latter end of the scale, offering modern Portuguese cuisine in a cosy setting with beautiful exposed stonework and a wonderful choice of tasting menus, one being dedicated as a sharing option. Alongside a wonderful wine list and sommelier, O Paparico is one of the best places to enjoy a sumptuous feast in Porto.
Along from the Dom Luis bridge next to the river is one of the busiest and most touristic areas of the city. Subtly nestled overlooking the hustle and bustle sits Wine Quay Bar – a cosy bar which sets a small number of seats on the terrace (get there early to save yourself a spot!), they offer an awesome selection of Portuguese wines, charcuterie and cheeses.
As well as seeing some of Porto’s classic highlights, including the Dom Luis bridge, Livraria Lello and Sao Bento station, no trip to Porto is complete without a visit to one of the city’s famous port cellars. Grahams, Taylors and Dows are some of the most famous port houses however there are some great smaller boutique brands to explore.
