San Diego is one of southern California’s largest and busiest cities therefore retains strong transport links inside and outside of the USA. The airport is very central (so much so that planes fly virtually past the rooftop bars in downtown!) and has connections to all major US cities as well as Canada, the UK and other European hubs. If coming from the North follow the I-5 through Los Angeles and further South to hit San Diego. Or, if coming from the West head across on the I-8 all the way from Arizona.
Like many US cities, San Diego is far from compact, with multiple different regions to choose from when deciding where to lay your head. If you’re looking for a spot in La Jolla, surrounded by some of the top foodie haunts, stay at The Grand Colonial. Alongside Pacific Beach, where you’ll wake up to the local surfers catching the waves before work, stay at the sleek Tower 23. Alternatively head downtown to the famous Gaslamp district, to find the upmarket The Pendry, or a modern and more affordable option at the Moxy.
La Jolla is a top spot to get some great food, with Nine-Ten being one of the fine dining highlights in the area. Being near to Mexico, tacos are also a big part of the culinary scene, with lots of highly rated taco stands dotted around Pacific Beach. For a special occasion however, check out Mister A’s near downtown, with mesmerising views across the city and equally incredible food to match!
If you’re just looking for a beer by the sea or a snazzy cocktail, there’s plenty of places to find a stiff drink in San Diego. The burnt orange Old Fashioned at Mister A’s to match the hues of the sunset is a great shout for a pre-dinner tipple. For a more casual beer, Barrel Republic is a funky bar in Pacific Beach with self serve beer tastings and over 50 rotating taps to choose from. Searching for a late night drink, relive the prohibition at Noble Experiment for an ultimate speakeasy experience.
Being such a diverse city San Diego has a lot to offer, from beach adventures to cultural exploration. In La Jolla you can’t avoid the watersports, with kayaking, surfing and snorkelling all great things to enjoy. Here you can also find the barking sea lion colony and if you’re lucky (and rather brave) join them underwater snorkelling from one of the beaches! In Little Italy you can enjoy the farmer’s market every Saturday and wander along the marina to explore the famous USS Midway.
Tower 23
Steps from Pacific Beach sits Tower 23, a luxury waterside lifestyle hotel. Smack bang in the middle of Downtown and La Jolla, Tower 23 is a great place to explore San Diego from and enjoy amazing sunset views.
