With the extensive network of low budget carrier airlines across Europe, Vilnius is very accessible from local Baltic hubs and from cities across the continent. Airlines such as EasyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air all fly to the city, along with national carriers, such as from London, Frankfurt and Paris. Alternatively there are multiple train connections to neighbouring countries such as Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Russia, from which you can catch onward connections across Europe.
The centre of the city, focussed around its beautiful old town, has a superb array of hotels, hostels and B&Bs for all budgets. If you’re looking to splurge, look no further than the fabulous Grand Hotel Kempinski, where you can immerse yourself in traditional luxury, with fantastic room options and a stunning spa to escape to on cooler days.
The culinary scene in Vilnius is one of two halves – from the traditional hearty fare to some exceptional new restaurants offering delicious fine dining. Dig into some of the historic local delights such as Cepelinai, a potato dumpling stuffed with meat, at Snekutis, a local pub with an array of local beers to try as well. For something fancier, head to Trinity, an ultimate dining destination with two bars and a restaurant (literally – the Holy “Trinity”), where you can tuck into modern European fare with a superb wine list to boot.
Beer is the drink of choice in Vilnius and you’ll find numerous establishments from cozy traditional pubs, like the legendary Snekutis, to the more trendy craft beer cellars, like Bambalyne, selling a range of local brews. Aside from beer there’s many other great spots including Nomads for cocktail lovers and Champagneria for a fancy glass of fizz.
The old town of Vilnius is a beautiful example of Baltic cities, with delightful cobbled street lined with traditional architecture and filled with a huge number of historic churches. The old town itself is compact and easy to explore by foot, so you can lose yourself around its winding streets. At the hub of the city you will find the striking cathedral to admire, alongside the Palace of the Grand Duke, with a number of fascinating exhibitions to discover. If you’re feeling energetic, take a hike up to the Hill of Crosses overlooking the city, with stunning views for miles around.
