Given its central Europe location, Zurich is a very accessible hub from across the continent and elsewhere. Its airport has flight arrival from all major European cities, including London, Paris and Berlin, as well as many other smaller cities. From further afield you can fly direct to Zurich from the likes of New York, Shanghai and Tokyo and several other international hubs. As with much of Europe, Zurich is also well connected by train, allowing you to travel directly to several other Swiss cities, including Geneva, as well as neighbouring countries, including Vienna and Munich.
As with most of the country, hotels in Zurich don’t come cheaply, with many of the best starting a several hundred Francs per night. Some of the more famous ones include the Dolder Grand and the Widder, all located centrally in grand locations. A wonderfully better value option is 25hours Langstrasse, located just a five minute walk from the station, offers quirky rooms overlooking the railway and into the city beyond with a buzzing restaurant and bar on the ground floor.
Whilst Swiss cuisine is rarely ranked alongside some of its European peers, the cosmopolitan city hub offers a great selection of local, European and global cuisines to get stuck into. From pizza to French to Argentinian steak houses, you can find something to suit all tastes! However, whilst your in Switzerland, it would be wrong to miss the one dish the country is so famed for – fondue. There are several excellent fondue restaurants around the city – one of the best is Swiss Chuchi, where you can feast on a wide selection of cheese dishes, all priced very reasonably!
As with its restaurants, Zurich is also full of many different haunts to enjoy your favourite tipple. If you’re looking to enjoy 360 degree views of the city, whilst sipping on fancy cocktails or Champagne, look no further than Jules Verne, a panoramic bar located slap bang in the middle of the city, with sunset views to die for. For a more speakeasy-style vibe, Old Crow is renowned for its bible of cocktails and spirits, particularly its whiskeys! With over 1,600 spirits to choose from and a hefty cocktail list, the excellent service and cosy feel adds to the delicious drinks to create a memorable evening!
The old town in Zurich is one of the most beautiful in central Europe, so you can spend hours losing yourself around the old cobbled streets it holds. In summer, much of the city descends on the lake to soak up the sun and cool off in the water, on which you can also explore by boat. For something a bit cosier, spend some time at the famous thermal spa for some R&R, or if your feeling flush, go shopping for a Swiss watch!
