There are only a couple of options of getting to Chefchaouen despite its growing popularity. I recommend you join the locals and get the CTM coach direct from either Tangier (3 hrs) or Fes (4 hrs). You can book tickets for the coach in advance online with an international credit card,  and in busy periods such as Ramadan I suggest booking as soon as you know your travel dates. The views of the mountains from the coach are incredible although you may have to swap seats part way through the journey! An easier although very restrictive option is to join a day tour from Fes/Tangier.

Accommodation within Chefchaouen is relatively cheap compared to other destinations in Morocco. Keep in mind when picking your hotel that the majority of the old town is made up of cobbled, winding streets with copious numbers of stairs, and is therefore inaccessible to taxis! We opted for Chez Aziz located just outside the old town, and very close to the bus station (your only way in and out of Chefchaouen!) All the rooms in Chez Aziz offer everything you expect plus a small kitchen and lovely seating area.

Ask majority of people where the best Moroccan restaurant in Chefchaouen is and they will all tell you to visit Aladin. Overlooking the main square and Kasbah the restaurant is split across several floors with the top two offering great views! Food is very reasonably priced with a special three course menu for only 85 dirhams. Avoid eating in the main square as the restaurants are overpriced and very touristy.

Throughout Morocco you will struggle to find a good bar due to Muslim culture. In Chefchaouen the only place we found that sells alcohol is Hotel Parador. You can enjoy a cold beer (or two) on their terrace looking across at the Rif mountains and Spanish Mosque. Hotel Parador also serves wine but only when dining in their restaurant.

Chefchaouen is a place to wander aimlessly through blue washed cobbled streets admiring the different shades of cobalt and cornflower; and perhaps doing a little shopping! This blue town is a photographer’s dream and the only way to experience it is to get well and truly lost. Enjoy the sunset from the Spanish Mosque and watch the sun disappear behind the mountains with the dusky light making the Chefchaouen seem even bluer!
